A Million and One Uses for Breast Milk

Breast milk is called “liquid gold” for a reason! Besides nourishing our little ones, there are MANY other uses for breast milk.
  1. Milk baths. Mixing a couple ounces of breast milk into a bath has many benefits including moisturizing skin; soothe irritated skin; heal diaper rashes and minor scrapes; and removing the itchiness from bug bites, poison, chicken pox, and other itch-causing ailments.
  2. Clear up baby acne, eczema, and cradle cap. Just by applying some breast milk, you can quickly help clear these conditions up! It took only one application to clear up my little one’s acne!
  3. Chapstick. You can help relieve chapped lips by rubbing some breast milk onto them.
  4. Treat ear infections, clogged tear ducts, colds, sore throats… just about anything! Put some breast milk on a cut. Put it in an infected ear. Drip some onto a clogged tear duct. Gargle to soothe a sore throat. Dab some onto a cold sore. The options are endless! Breast milk is like a universal medicine!
  5. Soothe and heal sore nipples. Rub some of the milk onto your nipples and let it air dry to relieve and heal your sore nipples.
  6. Allergies. Breastfeed babies are less likely to develop food allergies!
  7. Breastmilk soap. You can use breast milk to make a super moisturizing soap! Here is a recipe: http://traditionalmidwife.com/mothersmilksoap.html
  8. All the food! You can make just about anything with breast milk! Substitute cow’s milk for breast milk in a recipe. Some ideas are popsicles (which are fantastic for a teething baby), coffee creamer, ice cream, baby food, soup, milkshakes, mac n cheese… the possibilities are endless!
  9. Remove make-up. That’s right! You can use a cotton ball or pad soaked in breast milk to remove your make-up!
  10. Make jewelry. You can either have it done or buy a DIY kit, but breast milk jewelry is a super fun and beautiful way to memorialize your breastfeeding journey!
  11. Breastmilk lotion.  Just like soap, you can use breast milk to make moisturizing lotion too! Here is a recipe: http://www.justbreastfeeding.com/benefits-to-breastfeeding/breast-milk-lotion-recipe/
  12. Catching some good Z’s. Breastfeeding releases oxytocin, a sleep-inducing hormone, in both mama and baby.
  13. Prevent diarrhea and constipation. Breastfed babies rarely suffer from these!
  14. Decrease chances of breast cancer. Breastfeeding reduces the chance of breast cancer in both mama and baby. There’s also new studies coming out that breast milk may be able to treat cancer.
